Star Trails a Short Summers Night

]]>This was taken on 26 May from my back garden and is similar to one I took 6 weeks ago but this one covered a lot longer time. Ok technically still spring but it has felt like summer of late. The nights here are getting quite short with sunset at 9.00 and Sunrise at 5.00.

I recently got a new Interval Timer to try out longer exposures and lower ISO settings. The sequence started at 10.36pm and I then went to bed and left it to it taking 2 minute exposures. I was surprised in the morning to find that the Camera’s battery had lasted for 4 hours 24 minutes. As batteries drain faster in the cold it probably helped that the lowest overnight temperature was 16C, 61F.

Halnaker Mill 60 Minutes

]]>This was taken at an old windmill on the South Downs north of Chichester. It looks more derelict than usual because 3 of the sails have been taken down for renovation. There was light from Chichester 2 miles behind me and Bognor Regis 8 miles to the South. These lit up the clouds to the north which I think adds to the picture. There was also a little sky glow from London 60 miles due north.

Roof Open to the Stars Tias Lanzarote

]]>This was taken in an abandoned building on a lane between Puerto del Carmen and Tias in Lanzarote. The roof is open and the front is open. There was light from Puerto del Carmen behind me. The foreground is lit by a combination of that light, a few passing cars and light painting with a torch at the end of the sequence.

]]>I was coming back from the El Golfo coast where I took some sunset shots. As usual I was travelling by bicycle and decided on the way back to return on the quiet El Geria road rather than the busy main road along the coast. I noticed that the clouds were clearing and a good star field was visible. I unpacked the Tripod from the bike rack and camera from the panniers and set up in a Restaurant car park.

Stars Over Chichester Cathedral

]]>Normally Star Trails are taken as far as possible from light pollution. However I knew from pictures on flickr that it was possible and the available foregrounds are really worthwhile. The most important thing is to aim the camera up and avoid street lights in the field of view.

Tidal Pool Star Trails El Golfo Lanzarote

]]>This was taken Saturday evening which was a particularly clear night in Lanzarote. I went to a location on the southern coast near El Golfo where there is very little light pollution. The main light on the horizon is from the small village of El Golfo a short way to the north. Brightening the Star Trails did the same for the light and the clouds but I liked the effect so left it that way.

Crater Floor Star Trails

]]>One of my earliest attempts at Star Trails was taken from this crater in Lanzarote last year. Then there was a high wind and quite a few clouds around. This time it was a crystal clear sky with little wind. Another difference was using the fisheye lens to get more of the Crater Rim in the image which I think gives a more dramatic look

This was taken from the floor of the crater Montana Cuervo near Masdache, Lanzarote. It is not as well visited as many places on the Island. It requires an easy 20 minute flat walk on a footpath from the road to the base of the Crater. Round the right hand side there is a great gash in the Crater wall permitting easy access to the crater floor. There are large numbers of rocks scattered across the Crater floor.

]]>This was taken from the side of the Caldera Colorada volcano, near Masdache, Lanzarote. There is a 45 minute walk round the base of the cone. One side is an unusual rich red, made up from cinder, rich in iron oxide.

The tripod was locked in place and after the landscape was taken with a little light the stars were taken an hour later with 2 minute exposures over 1 hour and 34 minutes.
