Pre-dawn Sea Defences

Pre-dawn Sea Defences

This was taken just before dawn yesterday 9th December looking along the coast to the entrance to Pagham Harbour. This has become well known recently because a shingle bank developed across the harbour mouth leading to a very fast current with the tide washing away the coast and threatening nearby houses. The rocks in the foreground were put in place this year to try to stop the damage. My house is not under threat being about half a mile inland from here.

The image was a 58 second long exposure taken with a 10 stop filter. This reduces the amount of light coming through the lens nearly a thousand times.

The picture was taken on a Tripod with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 12 mm. Processing started with adjustments in Camera RAW for better detail and colours.

Further adjustments were made in Topaz DeNoise and Topaz Adjust. A hue saturation adjustment layer was used to increase red and yellow saturation and reduce blues. The sea was a little grey so I selected it and increased brightness just for the sea. More punch for the foreground with a clarity effect using unsharp mask 44 amount and 44 radius using a layer mask to exclude other areas from the effect.
